Wheeled warriors, pt. 1

Ned: I've been thinking about wheelchair people.
Rob: Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to call them that.

Ned: <sigh> What, then?
Rob: Ambulatorily challenged?
Ned: Laborious and lacking specificity.
Ned: There are other kinds of leg cripples.
Rob: Yikes.

Ned: Moving on. I tired of the way they're coddled by common society.
Ned: And I don't just mean the royal treatment when it comes to parking space proximity and restroom stall size.
Ned: It's more that people are accommodating to an unjustified and patronizing extent.

Ned: Rollers aren't that different from you and me. They can take care of themselves and should be held accountable for their actions.
Rob: Sure.
Ned: It's not like they're retards.
Rob: We should get you caught up on terminology.

I wonder if "rollers" (which I have never heard used in this context) would offend.

I understand you're not supposed to say "crippled" anymore, but I'm not entirely sure why. It's curious how terms gain and lose social acceptability. Who makes these rules?
